Basic Requirements for Usage and Maintenance of Standby Diesel Generator Sets
Standby diesel generator sets are generally used as emergency once interruption of mains supply. The routine maintenance of diesel generator set is directly related to whether the generator can really play a role at crucial moment, so the generator set should be maintained properly in daily life to keep in good condition and prolong life. The routine maintenance of diesel generator set includes the following aspects:
1. While diesel generator set at standby state, should often check the voltage of start battery, when the battery voltage is found low, should charge the start battery timely. The charge should be carried out in strict accordance with the battery manufacturer's instructions, to prevent damage to start battery.
2. Standby diesel generator set should be tested without load every half month, but the testing time is suggested not more than 15min, especially when the engine cooling water temperature is low. Because when the engine temperature is too low and fuel can’t be burned completely, it will cause carbon deposition in engine and black oil in exhaust.
In addition, every half a year, diesel generator should be tested with loading, and the loading is not less than the 50% of generator capacity and load time is not less than 1h. If the generator set with ATS cabinet is tested with loading, pls put the transfer switch at automatic position to achieve the purpose of synchronization test.
3. If the diesel generator is installed in the basement or other damp locations, we should pay attention to moisture-proof of generator set, often open the doors and windows for ventilation or use ventilation fan.
The generator is provided with a space heater, should regularly open space heater to dehumidify the generator, so as to prevent damage to the generator coils, voltage regulator and other components due to moisture.
4. Diesel generator is not in use for long time, should disconnect the output circuit breaker switch on control cabinet, and hung signs on the handle to prevent casualties and equipment damage due to misoperation or reverse power to generator when there are malfunction of other equipments.
5. For diesel generator set with cooling liquid heater, heater in the winter should be opened to heat the engine cooling liquid, so that the engine can be started easily.
For the diesel generator set without a heater, without the use of antifreeze, if it is not used in winter, should release the engine cooling water. And when releasing the water, all drain switches and water tank covers on the engine should be opened and will not be shut after discharge.
6. For diesel generator set in the long time standby condition, antifreeze should be replaced once every two years to avoid failure and damaging engine. In the meanwhile, lubricating oil, lubricating oil filter and fuel filter should be replaced.
7. The fuel tank of standby diesel generator should keep with enough fuel, and take different types of fuels in accordance with the seasons change if there are no heating equipment in winter and room temperature can not be guaranteed.
Keep the fuel in the fuel tank clean; while filling the fuel, the oil pump tubing can’t be inserted into the bottom of fuel container to prevent impurities at the bottom entering tank. The fuel tank after filling fuel has to precipitate 2h above before starting the generator set.
8. Keep the diesel generator room clean, and to prevent the small animal into the generator room.
9. The Generator room must be equipped with sufficient fire equipment.
10. Each diesel generator set shall be provided with record book, recording starting time, maintenance and repair content, replaced spare parts and so on, as a reference for future maintenance.
